SPORTS

Sports have been an important part of indigenous cultures around the world, serving as both forms of entertainment and cultural and ritual expression.

KIWCHAS

In ancient times, human beings began to play sports because of the need to run and be strategic in searching for food and protecting themselves. Throughout history several cultures implemented games (sports) either for political or competitive purposes depending on the culture.

Among the games played in the Kiwcha culture were: plucking the vine, peeling banana with the mouth, drinking chicha, Wami weaving, climbing the tree, the chasqui competition between four people and the blowgun (hunting weapon that is even applied today) the latter being the best known game in The Amazon.

One such game was "vine pulling," in which individuals competed to see who could pull the longest or strongest vine. Another activity was "peeling bananas with your mouth", which tested dexterity.

Additionally, the consumption of "chicha" (a traditional fermented drink) in which individuals sought to consume the greatest amount or demonstrate their tolerance to the powerful drink.

YERIWA YUKUNA

Given the natural environment in which the Yeriwa Yukuna live, their physical activities are closely related to their lifestyle and environment. Some "sports" or physical activities they practiced were:

1. Fishing: was a fundamental activity for many communities that live near bodies of water. For the Yeriwa Yukuna, fishing was not only a source of food, but also a sport where they competed to see who could catch the biggest prey or the most fish in a given period of time.

2Bow and arrow: Skill in bow and arrow handling is highly valued in the Yeriwa Yukuna community, and young people learn these skills from an early age by observing and practicing with the more experienced members of the tribe. Archery provides food for the community but also serves as an activity that strengthens bonds. Bows and arrows can be used in traditional ceremonies, such as initiation rituals or holiday celebrations.

Their activities are linked to their lifestyle, they walk long distances through the mountains as part of their daily trips and their religious rituals. In addition, they carry out agricultural activities such as planting and harvesting, which require physical effort.
